Art, Design, and New Media

Overview

The program was designed by the New Media Cluster and our partner institution, the Washington College Institute for Religion, Politics, and Culture.

The two-week long educational experience focused on new media and emerging technologies covering topics such as:
– New media, design, and society
– Issues in new media and social impact
– Globalization and media
– The rise of social media and alternative fact
– Social design

Social Media

Professors from American University offered insights into social media analytics and how to discern fact from fiction on social media platforms.

Contemporary Art

Students traveled to the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore, where they visited the school’s Center for Social Design and enjoyed a street art tour throughout the city.

Museum Visits

The Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Smithsonian Hirschhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, and The National Portrait Gallery were all part of the program.

Cultural Tours

In addition to visits to the Blue Mosque in Lanham, Maryland, and the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., students enjoyed a day trip to New York City, where they were free to explore the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum, and other art museums in the city.

In Their Own Words:

“This opportunity was something I’d never thought in my life would come, but it did. We were able to learn so much in a span of two weeks about culture, art, and social media and how they can be tied together. The program was well planned down to the smallest detail. We were able to balance classroom-based lectures with the outside tours and knowledge of different cultures. We were also taught about the architecture of Washington, DC, and why the subways are very important there. We were able to practice data analytics, which I still use today. And we were also able to tour different universities, which made me think about grad school, and how it can be a valuable thing to get the connections that we will need in the future.”
